How The Mediterranean Got It Right

The known longevity and good-health of the Mediterranean population has largely been associated with their cultural detox. Looking for evidence to support this theory, scientists carried out several case studies and found shocking results. One study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found a staggering 30 percent of all heart attacks, strokes, and deaths from heart disease in people with high risk could be prevented if participates switched to the Mediterranean detox.[1]

Here’s how it works: the Mediterranean detox consists of eating seasonal fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans, fish, and plenty of olive oil. It focuses on following the traditional cooking practices of the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Features of this detox, for instance only eating red meat on special occasions or about twice a month, are the key to lowering heart related illnesses, according to a recent article posted by US News.[2] The article also notes that the detox’s use of olive oil instead of butter and margarine, reduces blood pressure and lowers cholesterol.

The detox gained popularity when Harvard Medical Professor Immaculata De Vivo reviewed data from an ongoing study of nutrition in nurses and found those with detoxs closer resembling the Mediterranean detox showed a significant “reduced overall mortality, increased longevity and reduced incidence of chronic diseases, especially major cardiovascular diseases.”[3] Other results from the study found that the detox helps manage weight, prevents strokes, and balances out the bad effects of smoking and obesity.

According to the American Heart Association, 47 million Americans have Metabolic Syndrome, or a combined group of health risk factors including high blood sugar, unhealthy cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, and abdominal fat. In a study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association, 180 patients with metabolic syndrome were randomly assigned to follow either a low fat detox or the Mediterranean detox for two and a half years.[4] At the completion of the study, 86% of the low fat detox group still had metabolic syndrome, compared to only 44% of patients on the Mediterranean detox.

Additional studies exploring the comparative results between the Mediterranean detox and traditional low fat detoxs found the Mediterranean detox more effective in reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A study published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information documented the health of 418 non-diabetic participants over a period of four years.[5] The study found only 10% of participants following the Mediterranean detox became diabetic, compared to 17.9% in the low-fat control group. Overall, the study found the Mediterranean detox reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by an astonishing 52%.

Here’s the difference: the Mediterranean detox takes a unique approach to dieting by countering the popular belief that a low fat diet is superior to all other diets. Proving this point, Dr. Steven E. Nissen, chairman of the department of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation noted that “Low-fat diets have not been shown in any rigorous way to be helpful, and they are also very hard for patients to maintain.” Dr. Nissen supports the Mediterranean detox for its practicality, saying that “you can eat a nicely balanced diet with fruits and vegetables and olive oil and lower heart disease by 30 percent,” … “And you can actually enjoy life.”[6]
